Portland Street Rest Garden Reopens After Refurbishment

The LCSD refurbishment of the Portland Street Rest Garden in Yau Tsim Mong District has been completed and the garden reopened to the public on 23 September.

It’s good that these public spaces are being upgraded. We’re just not sure that bright pink is the most restful of colours – and the image of octogenarian HongKongers playing Chinese chess on bright pink tables is certainly one for Instagram.

Tsuen Wan Waterfront Cycle Track Opens

The 2.3 kilometre-long Tsuen Wan Waterfront Cycle Track is now fully open. Running from Tsuen Wan Riviera Park to Bayview Garden the path forms part of the 82km New Territories Cycle Track Network.

The new track as the name suggests runs along the waterfront and offers panoramic views of the Rambler Channel and Tsing Yi and connects to venues such as Tsuen Wan Riviera Park, Tsuen Wan Park and Tsuen Wan Sports Centre. Among the ancillary facilities along the route is a cycle practise area for those new to two wheels.

Check out the full New Territories Cycle Track Network at www.ntctn.hk. The route of the Tsuen Wan waterfront section has been uploaded to the HKeMobility app.

Very Hot Weather Warnings – But No Water

In recent weeks as temperatures have risen the government has issued almost daily Very Hot Weather Warnings.

Among the obvious, but welcome hot weather reminders is ‘Drink plenty of water’ which is sensible advice – except that the LCSD has closed all the public drinking fountains.

Far more people are likely to be injured or suffer from the heat than catch Covid-19 from the metal surface of a water fountain.

Hot Weather Warning

The Hong Kong Observatory has issued the Very Hot Weather Warning.

To prevent heatstroke, avoid prolonged activities outdoors.

If engaged in outdoor work or activities, wear a wide-brimmed hat and light-coloured, loose-fitting clothes. Stay in shaded areas as much as possible.

Drink plenty of water, and avoid beverages containing caffeine or alcohol.

If you feel sick, consult a doctor right away.

Virtual Parade, Actual Pride

In March of this year HK Pride Parade applied to the police for a “letter of no objection” for the 2020 procession, as of the start of November a letter has not been issued.

The organising committee of the 13th HK Pride Parade have decided that if the public procession and assembly are not approved police, the event will be held online this year.

Here and Proud

The theme of the 2020 parade is Here and Proud which the organising committee envision as:

Hong Kong should be a liberal and diverse place that belongs to us. All along, the liberty in Hong Kong is renowned for shaping the place into a colourful and vibrant international city with diverse cultures.

As such, the development of the equality movement has made LGBT+ into one of the rays of iridescence that Hong Kong, the Oriental Pearl, radiates. The support for equal rights for LGBT+ is ever increasing as the dazzling sight of the rainbow flag can be seen waving proudly amongst 18 districts. Freedom and diversity are the mutual pride of each and every Hongkonger.

The Hong Kong Pride Parade 2020 hopes that each and every one of you who yearns for freedom and diversity could support and join our pride parade this year. May freedom and diversity be sustained in our society, may we achieve equality and justice in the future, may each and every one of us be Here and Proud.

Rainbow Hot Air Balloon

The invention of hot air balloon in 1783 not only allows humans to fly, it demonstrated that impossible dreams could become reality with perseverance. Thus, we should let our dreams take flight.

Can a diverse, inclusive, non-discriminative society become reality? This year is the 13th Hong Kong Pride Parade and the key visual is the ‘Rainbow Hot Air Balloon’ revealing the different flags for sexual minorities, past mascots of the Hong Kong Pride Parade and the Lion Rock – symbol of Hong Kong.

The Sky Lantern is/was the embryonic form of a hot air balloon, in the past it spread messages far and wide, today it carries our dreams and prayers.

May we rise from the Lion Rock in the ‘Rainbow Hot Air Balloon’, longing for freedom, diversity, equality and justice to be shown to everyone.

Holi Festival @ Power Station Beach-Lamma 2019

The sixth Holi Colour Party was held at Power Station Beach, Lamma on the 17 March, 2019. Known as the ‘Festival of Colours’ Holi is a Hindu festival which celebrates the beginning of spring as well as the triumph of good over evil.

Where better to celebrate the triumph of good over evil than on a beach with friends old and new and good music. Even the sun agreed poking it’s head out from among the clouds for the afternoon.

It was a ‘bigly’ fun afternoon! Thanks to the organisers who made it all possible, and to everyone who came and picked up their rubbish to ensure that the beach was cleaner than when we arrived.

Explore the World of Wine & Spirits

This year’s Wine & Spirits Fair at the HKCEC runs from the 8-10 November and features pavilions from wine-producing regions, trade organisations and governmental organisations. There are new pavilions from the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Sichuan Council, the Department of Commerce of Zhejiang Province, Ningxia’s General Office of Administrative Committee of Grape Industry Zong of Helan Mountain’s East Foothill Wine Region, the Czech Grape and Wine Producer Association, Gifu Prefecture and the Niigata Sake Brewers’ Association from Japan, and Peru.

If you’re not a wine lover or fancy something different there is Liquor & Beverage Products Zone, a Whisky and Spirits Zone and a Beer Zone. As well as an Organic Wine and Spirits corner and for those wanting something to pair with all this alcohol there’s a food area and also intriguingly a “World of Olive Oil” where you can learn about and taste premium olive oils.

The first two days are for trade only, the public day on the 10 November runs from 10:30am and entry costs $200.
