Hong Kong Art Week 2025

The art world again focuses on Hong Kong this March with several exhibitions bringing thousands of art pieces from emerging and established artists to the SAR.

As the old cliche goes ‘one man’s art though is another’s trash’ and you’ll wonder exactly what the attraction of some pieces are – but there’s enough variety that you’ll likely find a few things to discus, enjoy and perhaps even buy.

As we say each year the old cliche still holds ‘one man or woman’s art is another’s trash’, and you’ll undoubtedly wonder exactly what the attraction of some pieces are – but there’s enough variety that you’ll likely find a few things to discuss, enjoy and perhaps even buy.

Art Central
Since this event started, we’ve included it here for free. This year, after listing the event in bc‘s event diary, bc received an email from the organiser demanding that we include a photo in the listing of their new (expensively created, no doubt) company logo…

In all the years bc‘s been covering this event, bc have not received a single dollar in advertising support. Not even an email thank-you for the free coverage… Nada.

So in response to their demand, we politely told them to F**k Off. If they want event coverage and logo exposure – pay for it, like they demand that companies do to have their logo associated with their event.

So we apologise to you, dear readers, that the event information isn’t here as you’d expect, but the event organiser doesn’t appear to think your dollars are welcome at their event.

Vinexpo Rebrands and Moves to Singapore in 2023

After twenty years Vinexpo Hong Kong is no more. The government’s covid restrictions on travel and the bar and restaurant trade have essentially forced the popular wine exhibition to leave Hong Kong for a location where over 1000 global exhibitors will be able to participate.

CEO of Vinexposium Rodolphe Lameyse commented on the move “Unfortunately I and my shareholders consider that Hong Kong is not where we want to be in the future.”

Vinexpo Asia will take place at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore from 23-25 May 2023.

Art Basel Postponed from March to May 2022

Art Basel today postponed its Hong Kong fair, which was scheduled to take place in March 2022, to May 2022 in response to the ongoing impact of the Covid pandemic and related travel restrictions.

Adeline Ooi, Director Asia, Art Basel said: “By taking this decision early, our goal is to ensure that we will be able to welcome the community of art supporters and members of the public at HKCEC, as well as the international audience that will be joining us virtually while protecting the health and safety of everyone concerned.”

The 2022 edition of Art Basel Hong Kong will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) from 27-29 May, 2022, with preview days on 25-26 May.

Art Basel Postponed from March to May 2021

Art Basel today postponed its Hong Kong fair, which was scheduled to take place in March 2021, to May 2021 in response to the ongoing impact of the Wuhan virus pandemic and related travel restrictions.

Adeline Ooi, Director Asia, Art Basel said: “We believe shifting the fair to May is the right decision given the current development of the pandemic and its impact on international travel restrictions. By taking the decision early, our aim is to support our galleries in advance planning for their 2021 programs. We very much look forward to hosting our show in May next year and to welcoming gallerists, collectors, and art lovers back to Hong Kong at that time.”

The 2021 edition of Art Basel Hong Kong will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) from 21-23 May, 2021, with preview days on 19-20 May.

Book Fair Health Risks

The Hong Kong Book Fair is by far the SAR’s largest exhibition with over a million visitors attending last year looking for a bargain or three amongst the plethora of books on sale.

This year’s fair is the first ‘big’ public event in the city post Wuhan virus, and quite simply the HKTDC seem more interested in money than the safety of HongKongers attending the event.

The hygiene and social distancing measures leave a lot to be desired and there are apparently no limits on visitor numbers at the fair. A perfect super virus incubator… with no way to track or trace those who come into contact with an infected person.

The “Reading the World • Inspiring the Mind and Refreshing the Soul” themed fair offers a bit of everything from the casual reader looking for a summer/virus page-turner to the parent looking to drag their child away from a screen. Prices are cheap, and there will be lots of special items and box sets.

The new National Security Law will cause problems for sellers, at least one publisher has already decided not to sell some books at the fair. And you can surely expect a high profile smackdown during the fair of a publisher selling books some insecure twat in Beijing finds too truthful for his liking.

We at bc love the Book Fair, but this year our advice is to stay at home the health risks just aren’t worth it.
