Match Report: HK Scottish Kukris 45-5 HKCC @ KG V – 22nd October 2016

The HK Scottish Kukris are having a rollercoaster start to the season, a good win over Valley, either side of loses to Gai Wu and Tai Po. The Kukris were looking for a strong performance against HK Cricket Club. And they started brightly, as after only four minutes Lo-Ho Yau sprinted from the halfway line to score under the posts. Karis Cheng converted; 7-0.

Cricket Club came back strongly and worked their way into the Kukris twenty-two. But a penalty for offside gave Kukris the ball. Karis Cheng was able to able to evade several tackles for another 50-metre dash to score under the posts, although she missed her own conversion; 12-0.

Unfortunately at this point the game was halted due to an injury to one of the Cricketers. After the enforced break it was agreed the first half would be completed and the second half consist of the remaining time available. It was the Cricketers who came back strongest and put Kukris under continued pressure. The pressure increased further when Lo-Ho Yau was given a yellow card for offside and spent 10 minutes in the bin.

In spite of repeated assaults on their try line by HKCC, it was the Kukris who scored next, with Nieve Heskin making another long run to score under the posts. Karis Cheng converted. Man-ling Hui and Hau-yi Chung combined well on the right wing, allowing Chung to score, with another conversion from Karis Cheng. The Cricketers immediately responded, shrugging off some soft tackles to open their scoring. Halftime 24 -5.

In the shortened second half any thoughts of a Cricket Club fightback were quickly extinguished. First Sze-ting Li ran an incredible mazy run to touch down. Man-ling Hui quickly followed this up with two fine tries of her own. Karis Cheng converted the latter two. Final score 45-5 to Kukris, with an impressive team performance from the girls.

Next week Hong Kong Scottish Kukris take on USRC Tigers in second v third clash, with both teams on ten points. Cricket Club, still looking for their first win, take on table topping Tai Po Dragons, also on ten points.

Match Report: HK Scottish Kukris 5-44 Tai Po Dragons @ KG V – 15 October, 2016

It was a balmy evening at the KGV ground as HK Scottish Kukris and Tai Po Dragons met for the first time in National League 1, with the Dragons having previously played in the Premiership. The game started evenly matched, with the Kukris putting Dragons under pressure. But just as the Kukris game-plan was about to yield results, the Dragons turned over the ball and counterattacked. The Kukris were slow to respond and the Dragons scored and converted 7-0. Kukris immediately replied with a good team effort, and Fung Yuen-ting went over in the corner. The conversion was unsuccessful 7-5.

The Kukris had a great chance to take the lead. The ball was worked out to Hui Man-ling on the left wing, who kicked it clear of the defence and gave chase. But as she headed for the try line under the posts, she was unable to gather the bouncing ball and knocked-on. The Kukris seemed overly disheartened by the missed oppourtunity. First they gave away a soft try. Then the Dragons scored twice more, by forcing their way through the Kukris’ defence, with two or more tacklers needed to stop each Dragon. Their conversions were unsuccessful, but the halftime score was 22-5 to Dragons.

The second half resumed in similar fashion. The physical Dragons continued to challenge the Kukris defence, and doubled their score; four more tries, with the first converted. However, just as the Dragons appeared to have total control, the Kukris fought back. The ball was won, retained, and then carried forward. Now the Dragons were under pressure, not that the outcome of the game was in doubt. First the Kukris moved into the Dragon’s half, then beyond the 22, and finally had the ball touched down. But the referee called them back for a scrum. And even though it was now the Dragons who were conceding penalties, the Kukris could not manage to score any more points.

Final score 44-5 for Tai Po Dragons. A well deserved win for a very strong Tai Po team, who now go top of the league with maximum points from two games, and impressive figures of 68 Points For, 5 Against.

Next week Tai Po Dragons take on Gai Wu, while Hong Kong Scottish continue at KGV for another 6 PM kick-off against Hong Kong Cricket Club.

Match Report: HK Scottish Kukris 37-15 Valley Red @ Shek Kip Mei – 8 October, 2016

After a disappointing opening game to the season against Gai Wu, when the Kukris failed to score, the HK Scottish players were understandably nervous ahead of the match against Valley Red. But a vocal home crowd proved to be just the encouragement they needed. The Kukris quickly settled, put Valley under sustained pressure, and it wasn’t long before Ket Robinson went over in the corner. Karis Cheng was unlucky with the conversion, which bounced off the upright. Before Valley could respond, Kukris had scored again through Fung Yuen-ting and Hui Man-ling, making it three tries in the spate of seven minutes. Again the conversions were unsuccessful. The pressure on Valley’s try line continued, but they managed to secure the ball and kick up pitch. Hui Man-ling caught the ball, accelerated away and scored in the opposite corner. No conversion. Half-time score 20-0 to HK Scottish Kukris.

The second half continued in the same vein. Nieve Heskin, one of the Kukris’ new players from Chicago, exploited a gap and scored under the posts. Karis Cheng made no mistake with the conversion. But Valley responded well, swiftly moving down the field and scoring, 27-5. Any thoughts of a comeback were quickly extinguished, as Crystal Lee, who had an excellent day on the pitch, powered over the line for a classic forwards’ try. But shortly after, as Valley again sought to break out of their own 22, fullback Ket Robinson was deemed to have tip tackled the ball carrier and shown a yellow card. Before Valley could make use of their numerical advantage, Kukris regained possession and passed to Hui Man-ling, who completed her hat-trick in the corner. But by now Kukris were looking ragged, and conceding penalties. Valley regrouped and swiftly scored two unconverted tries, but ran out of time to add to the score. Final score 37-15 to HKS Kukris.

Overall a great game for HKS Kukris, who, with the exception of the last ten minutes will be pleased with the performance. Next week the Kukris play Tai Po Dragons at KGV.

Match Report: HK Scottish Kukris 12-10 HKCC Ladies

Game 2 of the new season saw HKCC Ladies visit the Rock to face a strong HK Scottish Kukris side. The preparation was solid, with both teams having good numbers and a comprehensive warm up. The weather was perfect before kick off, with whispers of ‘Winter is coming’ from John Snow on the sideline.

HKCC started in what now seems a typical slow fashion, having to defend their own line from a barrage of Scottish attack, in particular by Robyn Beese who used her power to good effect. However HKCC dug deep and showed passion and desire to keep the rampaging Scottish at bay.

After riding the wave of the first ten minutes, HKCC began to get into their flow and the backs started to make some breaks. 15 minutes passed and HKCC’s determination paid off with Sandy Bay graduate Tissia Polycarpe scoring her first Senior Rugby League try by breaking through the centres.

The first half was a tightly fought contest that seemed to consist of scrum after scrum, after scrum. But after taking part in a scrum session with Hong Kong Men’s Coach Andy Hall earlier in the week, the HKCC forwards were well equipped to fend off the domineering Scottish front row, which last season had out-scrummaged them.

At the end of an exciting first half that saw both teams desperately hungry for tries, HKCC held a 5-0 lead.

The second half saw more of the same: some excellent defending from both sides as well as great attacking patterns seemingly cancelling each other out.

With fatigue kicking in and some injuries occurring, both sides looked to make changes. HKCC looked tired and the excellent Scottish front row took advantage of this with some superb counter scrummaging as well as making great yards with ball in hand.

However in a strong counter attack, HKCC forwards drove the Scottish defence back and gained themselves a lot of ground and a crucial penalty. HKCC scrum-half Ashley Brooks pounced on the ball to take a quick tap and go but the referee shouted ‘play on’. Despite this call a confused defence and scrum-half Ashley ceased playing. After a moment of hesitation Ashley recovered and scored a well-earned try under the posts.

HKCC received the ball full of confidence from the restart and again began to use their patterns to good effect. Only to have the ball turned over in their own half, leading to the wrecking balls of the Scottish front row once again, who powered the ball up the field with great steam.

The Scottish attack was in full flow and it was only a matter of time before they were rewarded. This came moments later with a brief lapse from an otherwise impeccable defensive performance so far from HKCC, the Scottish attack capitalised and Man-Ling Hui scored to make it 10-5 with 10 minutes to go.

HKCC regrouped and believed they could hold the home team out to the final whistle, but knew it would be tough if they had to defend for the whole period. So from the kick off they pressured well to cause a turnover.

Time to see the game out!

HKCC got closer and closer to the Scottish line hoping to seal a third try and the game. Inch by inch HKCC could see the line like it was destiny in front of them. Only for destiny to throw a cruel spanner in the works. The excellent Scottish defence counter rucked on their own line allowing their fly-half to kick it clear. HKCC scrambled back in defence yet it was not enough. Out of nowhere and quick as a flash the Scottish speedster Man-Ling Hui collected the ball and effortlessly scored her second, a breakaway try from her own twenty-two, leveling the game at 10-10 with only time left for the conversion.

In what seemed like an eternity, the ball rose high from the Scottish kicker’s boot and flew between the sticks, sealing a dramatic 12-10 victory in the last second of the game.

One of the most entertaining women’s games I have seen in a long time and one that showcased the rise in standard of the second tier of Women’s rugby. Well done to Scottish on their hard fought victory, but HKCC took great pride in the display as they lost by 50 points to the same team at the end of last season. Saturday’s result showed the HKCC Ladies that if they continue to improve like they have since preseason, they will be in the mix for honours come the end of the season.

Match Report: HK Scottish Kukris 12-10 HKCC

With both teams going into week two undefeated this promised to be a good game. And with the Kukris having home advantage they were confident of a win. Alas the game plan was swiftly thrown into disarray, as in quick succession, Captain Claire, second row Robyn, and full-back Ket came off injured. With the replacements still settling in, the forwards were seldom winning the ball, and that left the backs fighting a series of defensive moves. Half time couldn’t come soon enough for the Kukris, and as the referee blew the whistle for the break, the only real surprise was that the score was 0-5, HKCC having scored just one, unconverted, try.

The game resumed where it had left off, and HKCC scored another try, but again the conversion was unsuccessful. It seemed Kukris would have nothing to show for the day. But the forwards started to dominate the scrum and the backs held the defensive line. Then, with three minutes to go, and against the run of play, Man Ling sprinted up the pitch to score. The conversion was unsuccessful, bouncing back off the upright. But down by only 5 points the Kukris pushed up the pitch, determined to score again, until an infringement at the HKCC 22 snuffed out the attack. With the clock running down, it seemed it would be HKCC who would score, as they repeatedly assaulted the Kukris’s defense, that was now backed-up against their own try line. But a turnover allowed Kukris the ball, and a kick from behind the try line sent it up pitch. Giving chase and with support, Man Ling scored her second try under the posts, Karis Cheung converted and the referee blew the full time whistle. Final score 12-10 and an unlikely win for Hong Kong Scottish Kukris.

Match Reports: HK Scottish

Fielding two teams this season, the Hong Kong Scottish Kukris playing XVs in Women’s NL1 and the Hong Kong Scottish Sekongers playing 10s, both started the season with simultaneous 4:30 kick offs at the Police Club (Kukris v Police) and Tai Hang Tung (Sekongers v Revolution). The Kukris found themselves battling a vastly improved Police team, compared with last season, and with many of the new recruits more familiar with 10s, made little headway against a determined Police defence. At halftime, the Kukris were down 7/0. But with the weather deteriorating to a decidedly Scottish level, the Kukris’s fortunes changed. Sustain pressure brought results, with two corner tries from Yuen Ting and Ellie Ngan Kee. The conversions were unsuccessful, but in spite of a valiant fightback from the Police, Kukris held on start the season with a win.

Over at Tai Hang Tung, Revolution were making the most of their numerous reserves, but did not have it all their own way, with the Sekongers frustrating their attacks and dominating the scrum. As the weather deteriorated, running became more difficult, with the Sekongers positively enjoying the conditions. Tries from Hau Yi, Crystal and Suzi, two of which Suzi converted, allowed the Sekongers to score 19 points, and leave the field in buoyant mood, even though we lost (although we’re not sure of the final score as the referee’s notes were just soggy mush).

All in all a positive start the season.
