Carbon Brews Opens on Wyndham Street

Local craft brewery Carbon Brews new outlet soft-opened this week on Wyndham Street. It would be slightly misleading to call it a ‘taproom’ or ‘gastropub’ because (as you can see from the photo) it has a far more clubby/ lounge vibe.

With thirty taps, there’s likely to be a beer for everyone – flavour profiles range from the traditional to a pina colada flavoured Kokomo – and they are served in small, medium and large sizes. As well as Carbon Brew beers, other local craft beers and collaborations will rotate across the taps. There’s also an option to buy a keg and have your own ‘tap’!

Chef Sean Yuen’s menu features a selection of tasty starters and mains that the knowledgeable staff can pair with a beer to enhance your meal or snack.

Local Breweries Boycott Beertopia

Twelve local Hong Kong breweries are boycotting Beertopia this year due to rising costs. The boycotting breweries are Black Kite Brewery, Citi Brew HK, Gwei.lo, Heroes Beer Co, Kowloon Bay Brewery, Lion Rock Brewery, HK Love Craft, Mak’s Beer, Moonzen Brewery, Tai Wai Beer, Yardley Brothers, Young Masters Ales.

Here is the collective statement from the beer companies and the Hong Kong Brewers guild in full.

“At a recent meeting of the Hong Kong Brewers’ Guild, the majority of local Hong Kong breweries took a collective decision to not participate in Beertopia 2018. The Hong Kong Brewers’ Guild is disappointed to announce this result.

Beertopia has previously been one of the calendar highlights for local Hong Kong breweries – they like nothing more than sharing their beer with like-minded passionate craft beer fans. However, the increased cost of the event to Hong Kong’s craft breweries would necessitate exceedingly high prices for end customers.

Collectively, the Guild feels that the ethos of Beertopia has shifted away from its original focus on the enjoyment and promotion of craft beer. Whereas large international producers can afford the newly raised event costs by serving industrial-scale beer, local Hong Kong brewers have no financially viable way to participate in Beertopia.

In support of fairly priced events which showcase the best of craft, local and international beer for people in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Brewers’ Guild, the Craft Beer Association of Hong Kong and local breweries are working together to organise new craft beer festivals in the coming months and years ahead. Stay tuned for updates.

Thank you for supporting and understanding the decision taken by our local breweries.”

There are only three Hong Kong Breweries at Beertopia in 2018: Hong Kong Beer Co., Deadman Brewery24mInnocence Brewing is listed on Beertopia‘s website as from Hong Kong but it’s actually from Singapore.

BrewDog
Craft beer brewery BrewDog opens it’s second bar in Asia on the 4 February at 19 Hollywood Road, Central. The bar is the 45th for this fast expanding brewery which only tapped it’s first pint in 2007. BrewDog UK staff Neil and Lucy, in town to supervise the opening, are passionate craft beer advocates and the ethos of producing quality beers has – taste them yourself to see if you agree or not – survived the rapid scaling of volumes over the last eight years.

BrewDog Hong Kong has 14 beers on draft including regulars like their signatures Punk IPA (5.4%), Elvis Juice (6.7%) Jackhammer (7.2%) and experimentals like the delicious AB:19 (13.1%). The beers are served in UK pint, 2/3 pint, half pint and 1/3 pint glasses. A UK pint is 568ml compared to an American ‘pint’ which is 473ml and a Hong Kong ‘pint’ which can be as small as 335-385ml. When asked why the different serving sizes… it’s about keeping the quality of the beer. A customer won’t drink a glass of AB:19 at 13.1% in the same way as they’ll drink a pint of Punk…

There’s a range of food including delicious french dip sandwiches, lamb cheese fondue, jalapeno cheese bread and glazed donuts to be enjoyed with your beer.

Fei Jai Burger

Fei Jai Burger
For Chinese New Year The Butchers Club have a new option on their ‘secret menu’ the Fei Jai burger. Stacked inside a classic pineapple bun the ‘Fei Jai’ consists of a five-spice pork belly burger patty with a char siu glaze, seared luncheon meat, a crispy wonton, Chinese cabbage and coriander salad, spring onion mayo and a fried egg.

A veritable feast of Hong Kong flavours the pineapple bun holds together well as a burger bun, for health safety reasons pork has to be cooked longer than beef so the meat comes out a little drier than a traditional beef patty but the fried egg and the mayo lubricate the burger well. Luncheon meat and wontons are not what you’d expect to find in a burger but the crispyness and flavour add well to create a unique and delicious burger.

The Fei Jai burger ($88) is available until the 10th February at all three The Butchers Club Burgers outlets – Wanchai, Central and K11 in TST. www.thebutchers.club

The Roundhouse – Taproom

The Roundhouse - TaproomBarbecue and beer – as old as time and still a perfect combination! While The Roundhouse – Taproom awaits its Liquor Licence and the 25 craft draught beers arrive… yes 25 the attraction of the soft opening period is the Texas Barbecue and although it’s been open only a couple of weeks returning customers are a sure sign it’s not only bc who thinks the food is finger lickin’ good.

In a welcome break from the current local trends of dainty, intricate food served in minute portions The Roundhouse – Taproom offers US grade beef and pork smoked in-house over oakwood and served up naked to allow the meat to be savoured and enjoyed. The oak smoked meat, sold by the ¼ and ½ pound, smells gorgeous, looks delicious, and tastes fantastic.

If, when looking at the chalkboard menu you’re not sure what you want then try a combo platter ($320) – two smoked meats or the homemade sausage, a fried pickle and two side dishes – chzy squash, potato salad and pinto beans. The beef brisket’s crisp smoked, exterior hides moist marbled beef which melts on tongue; the ribs, best eaten by hand have just enough stick to need a little pull with the teeth to separate meat from bone. The pulled pork is beautifully cooked and full of flavour – but it can get a little lost amidst the stronger flavours of the mixed platter.

All the meats are smoked daily on-premise, with Texan Head Chef Austin Fry starting the process at 5:30am every morning. So unlike many restaurants, there’s a finite quantity each day and things can run-out, especially the signature beef short rib (top photo).

For those who don’t enjoy beer with their bbq, The Roundhouse offers free, yes you did read it correctly, free soda with all combo platters! And there’s no service charge! So remember to tip if you enjoy the meal.

And if you don’t have time to dine-in, there’s always take-away…
